The basics of foundation

Choosing a foundation can be a daunting task. Especially if you don't know what shade you are and how it'll look on you. The key factor is that foundation should even out your skin but still look natural -- not caked on. Meaning foundation should make you look dewier and healthier. First, there are many types of foundations out there. Here are three main types I'll be covering: Cream to Powder, Powder, Liquid and Tinted Moisturizer.

Cream to Powder: As it's name suggests, it goes on creamy and dries to a matte powder-like finish. These types of foundation are easy to use and you don't need to apply it all over your face for good coverage. Cream foundation isn't as popular as liquid foundation, but it is an excellent choice for those who have dry skin or more mature skin. It falls into the medium to heavy coverage areas, and it's rich and luxurious consistency keep skin look soft and smooth, without drawing attention to fine lines and wrinkles. This makeup is best applied with a foundation brush or with the sponge supplied by the manufacturer.

My personal favorite is the mark. Speedway Do Everything makeup ($8). I apply this with the mark. Foundation Brush ($6). Speedway is a cream foundation stick that can also double as a concealer. It's light and buildable which means you can control how much coverage you want on your face.

Powder Foundation: Powder foundations often appear semi-matte or matte in appearance, making them the best choice for skin that tends to be on the oilier side. They provide medium to heavy coverage and are best applied with a thick powder brush, such as a kabuki style brush, or the sponge supplied by the manufacturer.

I like to use mark. Powder Buff Natural Skin Foundation ($9) to set my cream foundation. I dust Powder Buff all over my face with the mark. Powder Brush ($8) to help my foundation last longer throughout the day.

Liquid Foundation: Liquid foundation is one of the most popular formulas in foundation makeup. It's widely available in sheer, medium, or heavy coverage and in prices ranging from just a few dollars to more than $60 per bottle. Using a brush to apply liquid foundation will provide you with the best control, although many people prefer to apply the makeup with a damp or dry sponge. Liquid foundation is best for those who seek medium coverage, have a few fine lines or wrinkles, or basic, every day coverage.

For those who prefer a liquid foundation, mark. has Face Xpert Flawless Touch Makeup ($9). This is a yellow based foundation so for those who have yellow undertones, Face Xpert is a great match for you.

Tinted Moisturizers
: Tinted Moisturizers are exactly what their name would have you expect. They are moisturizers with a slight tint to them, often contain sunscreen, and are the lightest and easiest to use foundation makeup. Falling into the sheer category, tinted moisturizers are ideal for someone who is just starting out with makeup, such as a teenager or for someone who wants to even out skin tone with minimal effort. Because this product is also a moisturizer, there is no need to also apply a daily moisturizer with this product. Use clean hands or a foundation brush to apply this type of makeup.

Girls looking for a light foundation should try mark. Get a Tint Tinted Moisturizer Lotion with SPF 15 ($8). It's a tinted moisturizer that does double duty: moisturize your skin and add a little coloring to your face - very natural looking.

So what's my foundation routine? First, I moisturize my face with mark. For Goodness Face moisturizer. This is a great moisturizer because it has SPF 30 (most foundations or moisturizers only goes up to SPF 15), it's made from all natural ingredients and it's oil-free which means it doesn't leave my skin greasy. The results: skin is nice and soft and a great canvas for applying foundation. Moisturizers are a must as they help improve your skin's suppleness and elasticity and act as a barrier against dirt, grime and environmental pollutants. Next, I dot Speedway on my areas that need to be even out and then blend with the foundation brush. To set the cream, I apply mark. Powder Buff with a foundation brush all over my face. The result is natural looking makeup that is not heavy at all.
