My first #SacTweetup
Hello readers! How was your summer? I spent it focusing on my family, health and personal growth. I had to unplug due to the feeling of being spread too thin -- one of the many downsides of being a Libra, always trying to find a balance.
Anyways, I really missed blogging and figured I should jump back in the pool again before life gets too busy in the fall/winter. Big shout out to Kristina at My Heroic Journey and Alicia at Word of Alicia for giving me the final push to venture back on here.
Speaking of venturing out, I had the pleasure of attending my first #SacTweetup a couple weeks ago and met up with Kristina for a mini mark. girl reunion. A Tweetup is "2-parts Social, 1-part Business." Basically you bring your tweeting device (aka phone, iPad, etc.) along to the event and network with others, learn about some local businesses, etc. The particular event I attended was unique because it was their first annual #SacTweet4ACause which benefitted our local Sacramento Food Bank and also erved as the venue. The food bank holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, my family lived a few blocks away from the Sacramento Food Bank and it became one of our weekly stops as my parents tried to make ends meet taking on jobs while speaking little to no English. We'd stop by every Sunday to stand in the long lines for their bagged lunches and I remember having a strong aversion to the yogurt and whole wheat bread used in their sandwiches. Flash forward to the present and I only eat plain Greek yogurt and wheat bread. I wanted to revisit my past.
At the Tweetup, attendees enjoyed appetizers provided by Hook & Ladder Restaurant in Sacramento. About a half hour into the event, the first group tour of the Food Bank took started. We learned about the services offered (way more than just food), expansions (those childhood Sunday lunches are now distributed at 10 off-site locations), and partnerships (with local farmers for fresh produce). I am amazed by how much the Food Bank has expanded. I'm also glad because it means that there will be more assistance for those in need of the extra resources while they get back on their feet. To find more information on the services offered, please visit www.sacramentofoodbank.org.
I'm sure other Tweetups are more geared towards the socializing aspect so if you'd like to attend a Tweetup in your area, you can check meetup.com or search the internet. These monthly events are usually free to attend. Your tweets during the event will enter you into a raffle for one of their many prizes.
